We decided during our last stay in Zurich that we’d head to IM VIADUKT in Zurich West. The old railway viaduct was built in 1894 and is now an urban hub that caters for all your needs. IM VIADUKT is 550 yards long and is a colourful mix of delicatessens, cafes, sports and fashion boutiques, plus you’ll find trendy galleries to browse around. At the heart of the Viaduct is the ‘Market Hall’ which holds 20 farmer and food vendors from the local area. At the end of Viaduktstrasse is a lovely park area called Josefswiese, which was primarily what we had gone for; the plan was to burn off some energy and enjoy the fresh Swiss air.
OK I’ll admit it wasn’t my brightest idea for February as boy was it cold! But we had a little adventure out on the tram and did have fun before our hands and faces went numb!
However, we’ve also been to Josefswiese during the Summer months and it is truly a wonderful place to be. There are cafes near by as well as very clean public toilets (a must when going out with little ones). The play area is maybe a little big for a 4 year old; it seems better suited to bigger kids, although I find this with alot of Swiss play areas.
During the Summer months the sand pit is always a big hit, as well as the water area which helps you cool off when it’s 35 degrees! Near the play area you’ll find lots of mature trees that help provide shade, so it’s nice to take a picnic blanket and set up your space for the afternoon. I love it there and look forward to warmer weather so we can meet up with some expat mummys.
For those interested in visiting IM VIADUKT you can take trams 4, 13 or 17 from Zurich Bahnhofquai HB. The stop you need is Dammweg, Zurich. If you’re new to the area or on holiday, download the ZVV Fahrplan app or SBB app to your mobile. You enter ‘to’ and from ‘destinations’, and they provide you with information on which trams or trains to take (plus up to date timetables).
